Metformin helps to decrease glucose (sugar) production in the liver and decrease absorption of glucose by intestines. Sitaglitpin helps by regulating the levels of insulin your body produces after eating. Janumet is to be used along with exercise and diet to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. - People who have liver or kidney disease and those who are ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment with insulin). Some people have shown to develop lactic acidosis while taking metformin. Some early symptoms can get worse over time and this condition can get fatal over time. You should seek emergency medical assistance if you have symptoms such as: muscle pain or weakness, numb or cold feeling in your arms or legs and if you have trouble breathing. Some people may get stomach pains, nausea and vomiting or slow uneven heart rate or feeling very weak or tired. People who are about to get and X-Ray or CT scan or are about to use a die that is injected into their veins should stop taking Janumet, temporarily. Consult your physician before taking Janumet.
- Do not take Janumet if you are allergic to any of the following: (metformin, Actoplus Met, Avandamet, Fortamet, Glucophage, Riomet or Januvia. There is a life threatening condition called lactic acidosis that can occur while taking metformin. You are more likely to get lactic acidosis if you have liver or kidney disease. Conjestive heart failure and severe infections occur when people are dehydrated or if they have been drinking large amounts of alcohol. Consult your physician about your individual risk. Let your physician know if you have a history of heart disease or pancreatitis or if you are over 80 years old and have had your kidney functions checked. - You should take Janumet as exactly prescribed by your physician. You should take the exact prescribed dosage recommended by your physician. Use the recommended dosage on your label. You should check your blood sugar levels often and have blood tests taken as recommended by your physician. You should take Janumet with your meals. You should not crush, break or chew an extended-release tablet. You should swallow it whole. Breaking the capsule causes it to release too much of the drug at one time. You should know the signs of low blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) or how to recognize them. Some signs include headache, hunger, weakness, sweating, tremor, irritability or trouble concentrating. You should check your blood sugar carefully during times of stress or illness. Try to exercise more if you travel and drink less alcohol. Try not to skip meals. - More Side effects>Lactic acidosis can get very bad over time. You may need emergency medical assistance with mild symptoms of lactic acidosis such as: muscle pain or weakness. You may get a get a numb or cold feeling down your arms and legs, trouble breathing, stomach pain, nausea with vomiting, slow or irregular heart rate, dizziness. You may get a feeling of weakness and get tired very fast. Call emergency medical assistance if you see any signs of any allergic reaction while taking metform/ sitagliptin: hives: difficulty breathing: swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat. You should institute a general supportive team as indicated when lactic acidosis is present.
